The story of Roc Fresh Crew


I wrote this blog entry as a continuation to my last post ;"my introduction to breaking" . Not many people are aware of the fact that the majority of the Freak N  Stylz members  went on to form Roc Fresh . I say this because there are many crews and Bboys who have  come up after 2009 and are progressing  a lot , they may not know the history of Roc Fresh. Earlier the scene as I knew it was  only in Mumbai since 2007 , then I saw Delhi’s scene developing at  around 2010-2011 at a fast pace. Now   there is a breaking scene in other cities like Bangalore , Delhi,  Shillong & the other northeast states, Chennai ,  and more . And when I say  a scene I don’t mean that there was no one breaking in 2007 or before ,  I mean a community, culture or scene as I like to call it, which is noticeable.

When Roc Fresh formed I didn’t really feel like I was in a new crew, it was like we were missing some. As Bunny and me were two of the founding members . When I came back from my illness , and heard the news that the crew had spit , I digested that after a bit , but what I couldn’t  was  the crew we started . I felt that we created a name and a reputation , which I felt wasn’t fair it should go to some guys who joined our crew later and got to keep it. But I slowly realized that I didn’t really loose the bond that I had created with Bunny, Amby, Wasim, Gani, and Xample. And for the reputation , I realized that we were individually established dancers. As for the reputation we had built up as a crew in the  media and industry , it could be done again , I was confident as I had built a lot of it in Freak N Stylz  . I didn’t do it all but a major chunk of the networking and contacts I had established . I knew Bunny and Amby had a lot of connections too. So we didn’t really loose much  

 We as Roc Fresh took a different turn after we formed , and it was more involved with the breaking community , if one were to ask me what the difference was between Freak N Stylz when we were in it and in Roc Fresh . Because when we had formed Freak N Stylz , there wasn’t really a scene more than a handful of crews, and we were really trying to establish ourselves as a crew, and ourselves as dancers. That is where more of the focus was. Not that we didn’t care about the scene . 

On the 10th of Jan 2010 Bunny and Amby started a jam called Cypherholics in Mumbai. An event where people of all ages and abilities  can come and just express themselves. If isn’t focused more on a competition or battles. For the first one there were around 50 people. By the third or fourth one in Mumbai we had over 200 people. Today Cypherholics takes place in many cities across India . In Delhi Bharat Rajodia ( BR) has helped to  organized the first few ones  , while Heera has always been there to support .In Mumbai , Bunny and Amby have been organizing it. Amby  puts a lot of effort into the organizing and execution of the event and the crowds get bigger every time. Dj Uri ,Zebroc ski and Kenneth have helped make it bigger where in 2012 we had Cypherholics in Mumbai at the Indo German Cultural program. It  has also taken place in Punjab where Aftab Khan (Affy) has helped organize it , in Shillong Bboy Kim has helped take it there supported it  , and recently Cyperholics took place in Kolkatta too.




New members in Roc fresh 

The longevity of a crew and its members depends mainly on how they choose them . I know Abdul since 2007 , since I started teaching at Podar school and he was  twelve years old. We decided to take him in our crew on the 15th of December 2010. Today he  has won quite a few 1 vs 1 bboy events  and is a prominent member of our crew. He is also a very close friend of mine  and we practiced a lot together during the week at my house and outdoors too as the majority of the crew lives in Navi Mumbai and both of us lived relatively close to each other.

Bunny also had a few friends who used to practice with the crew in Vashi-Navi Mumbai regularly and were quite good , one of them is Kunal Sable (KIDD). I knew Kidd since the first Cypherholics , I think that’s when I first met him or at least that’s what I remember now. His girlfriend Bgirl Amy breaks too , they were in a crew along with other friends which went by the name Individual breakers! I never enquired into that, but I think it was pretty obvious to us . I have battled Kidd in a couple of events before he was in our crew and he was pretty good back then . He joined our crew in 2010 the same day as Abdul. And I had the pleasure of battling alongside him at a couple of events in Germany  , where we battle Reckless Bunch , SD Mambo …..
Our newest addition to the crew is Nikhil Shinde (Chicken/Bboy Naughty ). I don’t know him as well as I know others personally , but I’ve practiced at the same centre with him since 2009-2010, but we didn’t speak much .

My introduction to breaking

What made me discover breaking was when I was watching TV at home in Tanzania in 2002. I was watching music videos and came across :Its Like That- Run DMC. I was fascinated with the power moves, and footwork that the dancers were doing on the floor. Of course at that time I didn't know what the dance was called. We didn't have internet either so I couldn't look it up. The combination of the breaking and the music was what got me hooked.  The same year I moved to India, to my hometown Dehradun where I "got down" or was "put down to breaking". I had a friend who liked Hip Hop music whose name was Anand Chopra. He had a big collection of MP3s on his computer and I had a CD case . We would exchange and share music and spend time at his house (he had a much bigger collection at that time). Abdul takes the cake ! Bboy Abdul killed it on the floor this year in Mumbai, winning the Redbull BC one India qualifier and a fancy red sports bike! He has one of the most natural and playful styles  that I have ever seen. He's come a long way from when I first met him in 2007 at  his high school R.N.Poddar school, Mumbai where I usd to teach kids breaking. He used to call me "Simon Sir" due to which the name stuck on till today. ( after being crowned the winner of Red Bull BC one India)  (This picture was taken in 2007 at the center where our crew used to practice.) Check out the footage below:
